Trafalgar Day 2021

Good to see the Town Hall with the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy Ensigns being flown yesterday, they are there to mark Trafalgar Day (today), one of the Royal Navy’s greatest battles, but also the day the navy lost the greatest leader of the time, Lord Horatio Nelson.

Huntingdon has many links to the Royal Navy, the first significant being three Huntingdon residents sailing to Holland for the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, Edmund Montagu (General at Sea), Samuel Pepys (Clerk to the Acts to the King’s Ships), and Edmund Ibbott (Chaplain in the Navy).

The Montagu family would go on to provide many senior Royal Naval officers (and four Huntingdon Town Mayors).
